Though they've been around since the year 2000, The Avett Brothers found their big break upon the release of their major-label debut "I and Love and You". The album's title track marked their first big hit, with the album selling over 500,000 copies in the U.S. Peaking at #16 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and hitting the top spot on the folk albums chart, they marked a sonic revolution. From then on, these brothers became a crowd-favorite name in the folk circuit. The Avett Brothers released their highly-awaited new eponymous album four years after the third installment to their Gleam series of EPs came out. Tracks on the Gleam series showcase stripped-back versions of their favorite hits, described by NPR as "a series of songs that remind you why people fell in love with this band in the first place." With a new album out for a live spin, the band seems to climb back to their roots, showcasing the classic groove they were always known for. KAXE offers a list of their top picks from the new album - "Love of a Girl", "Cheap Coffee", "Country Kid", "Orion's Belt", and "2020 Regret".
The album was recorded with Rick Rubin in various places - Malibu, Nashville, Mar Vista, and Concord, as the band took a spiritual journey of finding the unknown. The boys describe the record as a "collection of songs seen through a lens of independently studied spirituality; questions and considerations in the interest of the divine unknowable." Exploring something deeper into life's mundane, they take part "in the fun and surrender of what we cannot understand," their release shared.
