Legend has it that the first song that the Riverside-born Cornejo learned how to play was Richie Valens’ “La Bamba.” That’s a bit too fitting because he’s become a bit of the modern version of the rock legend. He’s singing some of the most popular hits in Mexican regional music, but don’t be too surprised if he does a cover of “Hey There Delilah” on this night, in Arkansas. They say that people who speak two languages often do so in different vocal ranges when they switch over. That could also apply to Ivan Cornejo and the way that he sings in English and Spanish. The Spanish songs feature that raspy, fast-talking delivery that’s become synonymous with norteño music. When he switches over to English he even opens his mouth more to get a better vocal range.

Singing lessons aside, though, what you can expect from Ivan Cornejo on stage is always a well-rounded show.
